This is a personal proposal for a better congress. and hopefully a better nation. Give the the United States house of representatives 1,000 members. This would have many positive results and few negative ones.
The average congressman represents 2/3 of a million people. In 30 years that number will be near 1,000,000. That is far too many for any meaningful representation. Cities the size of Cincinnati have only one congressman. In the west some districts cover a hundred thousand square miles. This makes it impossible for most people to see their congressmen, or even to see his staff in the district.
The only negative would be higher cost but that cost would be minuscule compared to the total federal budget.
One positive would be Washington DC could be given one or two congressmen with little opposition, though that would take a constitutional amendment..
This could be easily done. At the next election split each district in half. Reserve 2 seats for DC. That brings the total to 872. The other 128 could be used after the next census to adjust for populations. This would have each district with about 300,000 people, a lot but much less than now.
Another advantage would be third parties would have a better chance at house election. 1000 house members would also be harder for the leaders to control, giving a better chance of independent thought rather than robotic partisan follow the leader..
Though also requiring a constitutional amendment, an idea would be 50 more senators. This would give each state three. and one would be elected each election.
